 U.A.E Marthoma Chaplaincy Forum ....

"Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment"
Ecclesiastes 11:9
From the Chairman’s Desk

About a year ago ‘Chaplaincy’ among students who are born and brought up in U.A.E started and Rev. Zachariah Alexander(Zac Achen) is in charge of the ministry.

A cultural change involving values is necessary if our society is to remain healthy. At present the common good is not being cared for and narrow self-interest is dominating. What are the guiding principles of the new culture that is needed? These are of courses known to all of us, although we may not be following theme in practice. All the great religious teachers have laid down these principles: love your neighbors as yourself, do to others what you would have them do to you, practice ‘ahimsa’ (non violence) and so on.

We need a system of values inspired by concern for the common good characteristics by honest, integrity, unselfishness and comparison with stress on equity, justice and fair play. Teachers and Chaplains in the educational institutions and parishes can play a significant part in the inculcation of the right values.

On acquiring of values is a complex process and many factors come in to play: parents, the religious environments, teachers, peers and the media are a few of these. It has been said that the values are caught rather than taught. What is the motivation for young people to follow any system of values or principles of conduct? The strong factor will be the desire for success and they are likely to follow the principles actually followed by successful members of society, professional people , political leaders , business men and so on.
Teachers and Chaplains have also a contribution to make but probably it would be more by their examples than through their teachings. An experienced observer has painted out that students and young people in general have something like radar with which they are able to see what norms of conduct the teachers actually follow and that is what the students will response to.

I urge all the parents to send their children to the meetings, conference and seminars and all other activities arranged by the Youth chaplains in various parishes in U.A.E. This is my wish and prayer that in and through the UAE Mar Thoma Youth Chaplaincy Forum, the children may grow in wisdom and stature and in favors with God and men.

May God bless you always and in all ways.

Yours in Christ,
Rt. Rev. Gee Varghese Mar Athanasius
